Many of my blog readers and commenters have asked about the quote “The world is a dangerous place.” I’ve got a few thoughts on what the quote means, not just for other people, but to me, as well.
The most obvious point the quote is intended to make is that the world is dangerous for everyone. That everyone can be dangerous without meaning to be. That anyone can be dangerous and be a hero, and anyone can also be a villain and be a villain, and anyone can be a hero and be a villain. That everything is a little bit of a mess, and things can always get messed up, and that the people working to fix it are the ones who are the most dangerous.
On a related note, I am reminded of something Jim Elliot just said. It seems like we’ve all come to the point of the saying that “it’s not what you don’t know that gets you into trouble, but what you know that ain’t so”. This is especially true when it comes to the topic of our discussion. The world is dangerous, but we all have the knowledge that we could be a little bit more careful.
A good example of this is the fact that we know that we could take our own lives and still be alive when we do. We know that we could be killed, but we also know that we could be killed by a random stranger, or by a random person who is looking for a job, or by a random person who has a knife. When a person knows that they could be killed, then they are more cautious than someone who does not.
One of those random people is the person that the protagonist, Colt Vahn, meets on his way to kill those Visionaries. He is also in a time loop. He is stuck in a time loop like the rest of us. He is stuck in a time loop of what happened to him after he arrived on the island.
The protagonist, Colt Vahn and his companions are stuck in a time loop until the day when the Visionaries come and kill him. During that time he gets his memories back, but he is still stuck in the time loop of what happened after he arrived on the island.
Just like most of us, the protagonist of Deathloop is stuck in a time loop of what happened to him after he arrived on the island. He cannot escape that loop, but he can change it so he can escape. The question is what will happen if he escapes the time loop by changing it.
He can escape it by changing it. That is, he can change himself into a time traveler, a person who has no memory of what he did on the island he was on. This person can travel into the distant future, change themselves into an immortal and then travel back to the island, but they must do so with complete self-awareness in mind.
In my opinion, the only time you should really try not to escape something like that is if you have no other option. Otherwise there is something seriously wrong with you.
Just so you know, I like to be careful when quoting authors. Since I don’t have a lot of experience with this sort of thing, I’m not going to claim to know all the answers. The fact is, most literary works are pretty damn hard to read and that’s probably because they’re written by highly educated people. Not to take anything away from writers, but they are the gatekeepers of the literary canon.
