When it comes to signage, the first thing to do is to establish a clear hierarchy: 1. Clear, 2. Public, 3. Public, 4. Clear.
I know what you’re thinking here, “so we give people more information in their cars, but we give the car people information?” Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s great that we are giving people more information in their cars, but it’s more important to get the word out about the signage we give them. When it comes to signage, the first thing to do is to establish a clear hierarchy (1) which, by the way, is already established.
People who have a clear hierarchy in their cars will be more likely to follow through on their plans. When you give people signage, you should already be giving them information, because you want them to get out of their cars and follow along. When you have the words “you are invited to… “ printed out in big letters on the side of your car, you are giving people the information they need for the moment.
It’s not like this. You are not giving people information. You are not inviting them into your home. You are not inviting them into your car. You are not inviting them to your party. You are not inviting them to your party, and you are not inviting them to your birthday.
The people who are invited to your party, or your party, are not invited to your car, or your home, or to your business. The people who are invited to your party, or your party, are not invited to your sign. Its just that simple.
The only way to get the message over was to bring someone out. The rest is just an acknowledgement that you did not ask for the message.
It’s a bit like the quote that is always attributed to the late, great Steve Jobs. It says, “Only the stupid are allowed to have phones.” Only the stupid would have smartphones. Even the people who are allowed to have phones, only the stupid would have phone service.
I don’t actually use a smartphone, but I would assume that the only people that would be allowed to have phone service are the people that actually need it. I know that’s an unfair assumption, but I don’t think I would use my phone to take pictures and listen to music.
I don’t either. But then again, I have my own phone to use, so it isn’t like I’m missing out on anything.
If you want to use your phone to take pictures and listen to music, you need to bring the phone into your house. It can get expensive, and most people don’t have a lot of extra money to put toward a new phone.
